The Students' Colloquia

Overview
In 2025, the Austin Institute introduced the Colloquia, a series of monthly public events featuring expert-led discussions on a range of topics such as politics, education, and history.

The Austin Institute’s Colloquia were established to provide an intellectually stimulating environment for individuals seeking meaningful dialogue on complex and enduring issues. Building on the success of these gatherings, the Institute is launching the Students' Colloquia. This initiative invites undergraduate and graduate students to apply to present topics of personal academic interest, develop their ideas with mentor support, and receive a $200 award if selected.

Format of the Colloquia
Each presenter has 20 minutes (timed!) for their talk. Media is permitted only when strictly necessary for the delivery of the presenter's main idea. Presenters may bring notes.

Following the 20-minute presentation, there will be a 30-minute period for questions and answers.

Eligibility
Current undergraduate and graduate students, as well as recent graduates (within two years of graduation), from any university in Austin are eligible to apply. Applicants must have attended at least three Austin Institute events during the 2025-2026 academic year and must commit to attending a writing seminar, which will be hosted by the Institute in the 2026-2027 academic year.

Benefits for Selected Participants

Selected participants will receive a $200 stipend, administrative and marketing support, access to the community space, and mentoring for colloquium preparation and delivery.
